Given the financial burdens associated with the current cost of living crisis, more and more people are searching for ways to save money on energy bills in the home. After all, energy prices have skyrocketed in recent times, and they show little signs of slowing. So, with that in mind, here are some top tips that will help you save money on your energy bills this winter.

Avoid standby

Leaving your devices on standby costs the average homeowner £65 per year, so remembering to turn your appliances off is a quick and easy win. Instead of reaching for the TV remote, always remember to turn it off at the socket and follow this example for all other appliances. Therefore, avoiding standby is an excellent way to cut back on your energy bills with very little effort.

Draught-proof your windows and doors

Unless you live in a newly-built house, it’s likely that your home loses some heat through its windows and doors. Having your home professionally draught-proofed can save as much as £125 per year on energy bills. In order to save further money, you could learn how to DIY draught-proof your home, but you need to make sure that you’re thorough with the job for the maximum savings.

Adjust your washing machine settings

Washing your clothes in cold water is another great way to save on energy bills. In fact, switching to a 30-degree cycle can save you around £34 per year. What’s more, tumble dryers are typically energy inefficient, so drying your clothes naturally – either outside or in the spare bedroom – can save you further money when it comes to your home energy bills.

Use your wood-burning stove

Decreasing your reliance on your home’s central heating is another great way to save money. If you have a wood-burning stove or open fireplace, it’s a good idea to set a fire to heat the room for your family. You can buy a money-saving bundle from Homefire to access sustainable firewood at a great price, and it can be an efficient way of heating your home this winter.

Use smart controls

Installing a smart thermostat that you can access via your mobile phone is a great way to save money on your energy bills. Smart thermostats enable you to control the heating in the respective rooms within your house, turning it on and off at times that suit you. This is a much better option than simply leaving the heating on for long periods of time and will end up saving you a considerable amount of money when it’s time to pay your energy bills.

Recap: How to save on your energy bills in the home

You can utilise each of the above tips to save money on your energy bills. The good news is that they’re all really easy to implement and don’t require a great deal of effort on your part. So, with the cost of living crisis set to stay for the near future at least, make the most of these tips to alleviate the financial burden on you and your family this winter.
