There is already a lot of business potential in black soldier fly farming, and this demand is only expected to rise in the future. With environmental issues closely linked with the current practices of the meat industry, the world will need to make use of alternative protein sources as well if it is expected to feed the constantly growing population and avoid food shortages.

Read on to find out more about why BSF farming will only become more profitable with time!

BSF Farming: a Profitable and Sustainable Practice

BSF farming is gaining more and more recognition as a profitable and environmentally-friendly practice. They have a much smaller environmental footprint compared to traditional sources of protein like farm animals, or even soybeans. This is mainly because they require much less water, land, and even feed to be able to produce the same amount of meat like beef, swine, or chicken.

Furthermore, they are essentially a zero-waste solution thanks to their strong digestive system which allows them to decompose the bacteria in all kinds of organic waste. Not to mention that their own remains can be used as an organic fertilizer for your soil.

This further lessens their environmental footprint as they do not need to depend on soy-based feed. Think of them as very apt recyclers: they will convert almost any waste into quality feed!

Why is BSF Farming Profitable?

The benefits of BSF farming make them attractive to insect farmers and consumers alike. Demand is already present from more eco-conscious customers and athletes looking for an organic source of protein that doesn’t burden our environment as much as more traditional meats. But they are also especially useful for pet owners and farms since black soldier flies are not only rich in protein, but minerals, vitamins, and essential fatty acids as well.

BSF farming is basically a win-win situation: they are easier and cheaper to farm (since they require less space, water, and feed) and are less harmful to our ecosystem. Not to mention that thanks to their short life-cycle, you can easily keep production levels high. You would only need 2 weeks and 20 square meters worth of space to grow 1 ton of BSF!

What kind of Equipment do I need to Make my BSF Farming Business Profitable?

While BSF farming is certainly easier compared to traditional farm animals, you will still need the right equipment. One of the basic requirements is a setting that is humid, warm, and gets enough sunlight since that will provide the most ideal conditions for the flies to mate with each other. You will also need the right-sized cage (or cages), a clean water source, and enough organic waste as feed.

To recover the fat and protein content from the larvae, and turn it into a dry protein powder, you will need an on-site insect protein processing equipment: these high-tech machines can automatically render all edible insects, including BSF, crickets, and more. They use high-pressure and high-temperature steam to ensure that all end-products you recover at the site of your BSF farm are sterile.
