Spamen, popularised by the former Top Gear host James May and featured in his book/show Oh Cook!, is a clever fusion of the American tinned Spam meat and instant Japanese ramen noodles, complete with fresh Asian-inspired toppings and a crusty cornflake crust.
Ever wondered how you can make this special dish yourself in your Lucerne Grand home? Here’s everything you need, from ingredients to instructions!
The Ingredients
Of course, we cannot make the meal itself if we don’t have the ingredients. Prepare the following:
- A pack of instant ramen noodles
- A tin of Spam (Cut into slices or thick fingers)
- Plain flour
- Crushed cornflakes
- Bok choy/pak choy
- Sliced scallions (Spring onions)
- 1 or 2 eggs (One beaten, the other for toppings/boiling)
- Fresh chili pieces or chili oil
- Cooking oil (For frying)
The Instructions
- First, prepare the Spam: Cut the meat into “finger-sized” slices. Dredge the pieces first in plain flour, dip them in the beaten egg, and then roll thoroughly in the crushed cornflakes to coat them.
- Second, fry the meat: Heat the oil in a frying pan over moderate heat. Cook the coated meat fingers for about 3 minutes each side until it is golden brown and crisp, then set them aside.
- Third, cook the noodles: Prepare the instant ramen noodles according to the package instructions (boil in a pot or fill to the line), remove or use the flavor packet if you want or not, then let it steep.
- Fourth, put together the dish: Place the cooked and hot noodles into the serving bowl.
- Finally, serve and top: Arrange the crispy cornflake spam fingers over the noodles. Add a sliced or halved boiled egg, blanched bok choy/pak choy, chopped scallions, and a bit of chili oil.
Congratulations, you have cooked up a delicious and wonderful meal. Now enjoy it with either your friends, family, or by yourself!
