In everyday life we are exposed and encouraged to unhealthy ways of living. From fast food to air pollution, there are a number of ways that unhealthy choices impact our wellbeing. However, when it comes to your home, you have the option to make it a healthy and safe space, for your mental and physical health. Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, the practice of maintaining a healthy home has come to fruition, as people are looking for ways to prevent and reduce bacteria and viruses festering and lingering in your property. There are plenty of ways to implement a healthy home, yet many people don’t know where to start or how to avoid spending excessive amount of money on expensive products. Here at We Buy Any House we have compiled our top ways to make your home safer and healthier.

1. Encourage Frequent Hand Washing:

It’s a task we’re taught as young children, however people often forget its importance. The Covid-19 pandemic shone a spotlight on the importance of washing your hands, and although it’s not the most innovative way to create a healthier home, it can make a huge difference. Get into the habit of washing your hands whenever you come in from outdoors, as you can easily pick up toxic contaminants from outside.

2. Use Green Cleaning Products:

Although you may think using bleach and other chemicals to clean your house is the best way to ensure your house is free of dirt and germs, but the products you’re using may cause more harm than good. A way to make your house safer and healthier is to switch to eco-friendly cleaners and ditch the harsh cleaning products. By making this switch, you can not only maintain a high level of cleanliness in your home, but also not have to worry about irritating chemicals in the air.

3. Wash Your Towels More Often:

A simple and easy way to make your home a safer and healthier place is by washing your towels and other bathroom linens more frequently. Due to their exposure to warmth, moisture and fungi, bath towels and linens are a breeding ground for bacteria and fungo. Research suggests that you wash your towel after three uses, that is assuming it dries completely between uses.

4. Keep Electronics Out of the Bedroom:

We’re all guilty of bringing our smartphones, tablets and laptops into the bedroom. However, this may be disrupting your goal of having a healthier home. Studies have shown that blue light wavelengths, which are emitted from these devices, can alter the body’s circadian rhythm (or biological clock), which is linked to sleep. This may increase health conditions such as heart disease, obesity and even cancer, so it’s recommended that you stop using your devices a few houses before bed and charge them outside of the bedroom.

5. Change Your Sheets More Often:

Your bedroom should be a place for relaxation and one of luxury- and a way to achieve this, in addition to a healthier home, is to start washing your bed sheets more often. Around 70% of laundry soil is invisible, such as dead skin cells, body oils and sweat. Leving these things to fester in your bed can not only irritate your skin but become a breeding ground for dust mites. It’s recommended that you change your sheets at least once a week, and if you’ve been ill to soak them in hot water.

6. Add Houseplants:

Not only will houseplants make your home more atheistically pleasing, but it will also improve the air quality that you breathe. Houseplants can help to filter harmful chemicals such as benzene and formaldehyde, in addition to brightening and beautifying the space. Spider plants, English ivy and Boston ferns are the plants recommended to improve indoor air quality.

7. Filter Your Water:

We all know the importance of drinking water and staying hydrated, however in order to have a healthier and safer home, you need to start filtering the water you drink. By simply using a water filter, you can reduce the number of contaminants such as lead, chlorine and ammonia- which all come from tap water. There are plenty of inexpensive and effective ways to filter your water from pollutants, and perhaps it’s a good idea to skip using bottled water- as it isn’t necessarily safer or cleaner for you or the planet.

There are plenty of ways to make your home healthier and safer for not only you, but for family, friends and other visitors. The advantages of transforming your home are endless and can even help you if you are looking to put your property on the market. So, if you’re wondering “how can I sell my house fast?”, perhaps making your home safer, healthier and more eco-friendly is a great place to start!
