Strokeis a type of brain injury that occurs due to a disturbance in the brain’s blood supply. It has been reported that every four minutes, a person dies due to a brain stroke. Moreover, studies are ongoing to find a relationship between oral cavity hygiene and brain stroke.

If a victim ever notices symptoms of a brain stroke-like dizziness, muscle weakness, or difficulties with coordination. They should immediately get in touch with Cottonwood dentists at Peak Family Dental Care as they may be able to help a patient understand whether their symptoms are due to oral hygiene issues or something else.

Understanding stroke.

Before understanding the relationship between stroke and the oral cavity, one must be aware of what stroke is. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain bursts or a blood clot blocks the blood flow to the brain, depriving the brain of oxygen and blood.

People aged above 65 are at a high risk of getting a brain stroke. Moreover, people who consume alcohol or smoke cigarettes, or follow an unhealthy lifestyle, are at higher risk of encountering a brain stroke.

Understanding gum diseases.

Bleeding, swollen or inflamed gums may indicate that a patient suffers from gum disease. Gum diseases can occur due to bacterial infections or other reasons. Practicing good oral hygiene may help a victim stay away from gum diseases.

What is the relationship between gum diseases and brain stroke?

Inflammation of the gums is the main connection between gum diseases and brain stroke. A bacterial invasion of the gums may allow the bacteria to enter the bloodstream and lead to inflammation. This may lead to the formation of a blood clot that may lead to a brain stroke. However, this link between gum inflammation and brain stroke is not yet proven, but it is strongly believed that there is a link between these two.

Inflammation of the gums may also be associated with diseases like diabetes, certain types of cancer, or Alzheimer’s disease. Gum inflammation resulting due to these diseases may also be related to brain stroke.

It has been noted that patients who suffered from a brain stroke had infected gums. It has been advised to such patients to maintain good oral hygiene by brushing twice and flossing once every day to avoid another episode of brain stroke. Moreover, maintaining good oral hygiene will ensure that a patient does not have any possibilities of other health complications.
